I've got nothing against tying a subscription to an equipment subsidy as
a quid pro quo- sell a Blackberry for $499 with no contract, $299 voice-
only, $99 voice+data, for example, but forcing unwanted services on
customers is stupid, even from Verizon's POV- if the customer wants a
dataless PDA/phone bad enough, he or she might opt to buy a Blackberry
with no data service from a different carrier that allows it, rather than
choose between Verizon's two unattractive options: a forced $300-500/year
unwanted data plan, or sticking with a "dumbphone" to avoid it.
Yep - I'm going to be checking other carriers now.
I will also explore getting a dumb phone and buying a PDA. Savings appear
to be around $800: $100 (or more) for the phone, and $700 that doesn't need
to be paid in data charges for the two-year contract period. Cost of a PDA with
WiFi: between $200 and $300.
