Janet is correct based upon my experience for the past year.

You're wrong about the data charge, Janet.
From the VZW website...
------------------
* Unless you subscribeto V CAST VPak, V CAST Mobile TV Select Package or
Nationwide Premium Plan, downloading the Backup Assistant application will
require approximately 1 MB of data. Data sent or received will be
aggregated each month, rounded up to the next megabyte and billed at $1.99
per MB.
------------------
The data transfer charge is different from the $1.99 monthly access charge
(which is free with a My Verison account).

So do they hit you with data charges for backing up your phone book one

They do. Looks like you'll have to screw them.

I have had backup assistant for quite a while and I've never been charged
for it. If you have a "My Verizon" account it doesn't cost anything. I am
wondering why people who are savvy enough to post on Usenet don't have a
My Verizon account yet.
I recently got a new phone and downloaded all of my contacts to the new
phone from Backup Assistant. It was flawless and free.
I set my backup assistant account to automatically call in any changes at
a particular time of day. It has worked fine for me.
