I got the Touch to test this out. I am already a Blackberry user
(Pearl then Curve), as well as a Windows Mobile device user (Dell
Axim). They do sync flawlessly. The Touch does not and has already
cost me well over 10 hours in time trying to get this
"works-out-of-the-box" gadget to work, including re-installing
Outlook and iTunes, as well as erasing and formatting my Touch twice
(takes over an hour each time). This is not good.
I have similar experiences, including the waste of time.
On top of that, a different bug cost me an unnecessary 50 mile round
trip worth of gas, because Apple Technical Support incorrectly told
me that my iPod Touch was defective and needed to be exchanged. That
bug is the infamous "An unknown error occurred (1602)" and "An
unknown error occurred (2001)" in iTunes on the Mac.
My problem report is in Apple's bug tracker, along with the detailed
interaction with Apple engineers, as 5696826. It's marked by Apple
to be a duplicate of 5599767 which is someone else's report.
As of iTunes 7.7, it remains unfixed; but iTunes on Windows will
unbrick an iToy that was bricked in this way by Mac iTunes.
I gave up on syncing with Outlook, and just maintain a parallel
calendar and contact list on the Mac. However, I spent many
additional hours trying to help some else with an iPod Nano who only
had Windows, before giving it up as a lost cause.
I'm sorry to say
you're right: this is not a device for serious users, only kids who
want an impressive toy.
The iPod Touch is a nice media player that does Internet too, as
compared to the much cheaper N800/N810 which is a nice Internet
tablet (far superior to iPod Touch or iPhone) that does media too
(not as good as iPod).
The iPhone is an iPod Touch that does a phone too. But it is
mediocre as a phone. The interface isn't as bad as Windows Mobile,
but you still have to go through multiple steps to place a call. Try
operating an iPhone blindfolded as a simulation of an emergency.
iPhone also lacks many of the capabilities of even basic phones, such
as a full Bluetooth profile and one-touch voice dialing.
The flaw isn't so much in iPhone or Windows Mobile as it is in the
false notion that one gizmo can do multiple unrelated tasks well. A
gizmo generally does one thing well, and does the other things "too".
iPhone is first and foremost an iPod; and for that purpose it is
outstanding (albeit expensive). If what you really want is an iPod
that does this other stuff too, then an iPod Touch or an iPhone is
for you.
If what you want is first and foremost a phone, or first and foremost
an Internet tablet, then you want a different device.
I found, lo and behold, that my Touch WILL sync my calendar on my office
computer (both my home and office computers are Windows XP PCs with the same
version of Outlook on them). It will NOT sync the calendar on my home
computer (which is, of course, where I want to do my main syncing). So, get
this, I sync my home Outlook calendar to my BB Curve, bring it to the
office, sync it to the office machine, and THEN sync the calendar to my
Touch.
Now there's convenience and functionality for you, huh? :-)
And I haven't yet tested whether the Touch syncs both ways on that machine.
I'm trying to hang onto the Touch until someone comes along with what I
think should be a simple patch. I've seen talk of version 2.1 software
coming around. Maybe I'll try to wait....... ;-)
