As a phone connection using regular plan minutes should be possible to any

don't you have to pay Verizon a $15/month fee on top of your existing data
plan?

I don't.

I also don't see how they could tell that I am using the PDA/phone as a
modem, tethered to our laptops, via either the charging cradle or
Bluetooth. We have been doing that for almost two years.

That said, I don't pretend to understand all the underlying technology,
so perhaps there is a way they can tell. They haven't said anything yet,
though.

Hmmm... Verizon technical support told me it wouldn't even work unless they enable the "BBA" option for that phone (that's the $15/month option). I tried it, and it wouldn't connect (the correct option was set on the phone).

All I can tell you is how I do it.

I use a piece of freeware (wModem) to connect my XV6600 PDA/phone to my
laptop using the USB cable that is on the charging cradle. I also use a
Bluetooth dongle in my laptop and my wife's laptop to connect, using
nothing more than DUN.

Out of the box, my phone (LG VX9900, not a PDA/Smartphone) allows me to connect to the 1x network when using DUN (although, its only 2x as fast as dialup) via bluetooth to my laptop.
I used a program called QPST to change 1 internal setting on my phone and I can connect via EVDO and get 512kbps down/128kbps up.
Also, I got the unlimited (5GB actually) data plan (aka VCast), so I dont have to worry about them charging me $2/MB of data!
