I have used the Novatel USB 720 with Verizon CDMA since shortly after it was introduced.
I get great reception and speed with just the one port (plugged into a USB port without the 2-headed cable). In the few cases that I used it from far flung areas (VZQ Navigator shows 1 bar or even 0 bars), I am slightly better with the cable attached to 2 ports, but I suspect that this is due to the freedom it gives in orienting the device. Of course, if you sit the device in a sweet spot, it also becomes immune from occasional movement of the PC.
Of course, this does not mean that two ports are redundant. It is possible that my Dell Inspiron 9400 is designed to provide extra current through 1 USB port, whereas other PCs may be limited.
