I found the best method is to keep the same billing date. They will allow
you to change you plan and make it effective on your next billing date or
you can make if effective with your previous billing date. Either way you
avoid the prorated charges that always cost you more.

I recently changed my plan to get additional minutes. I was happy that
this didn't require a contract extension, but my bill for the first month
is higher then expected. I spoke with a customer service rep who tried to
explain something about phone companies billing a month in advance, but I
didn't get it. Basically, for one month I'm being charge $20 above the
cost of the new plan. Can anyone make sense of this for me? Is this money
invested in the future and if I cancel service after my contract expires
will my last month's bill be $20 less?
