Cell phone on the Cruise ship

We are going on a cruise around New Zealand. The cruise ship brochure says the boat has cell service. While I don't plan on making or receiving any calls, DH wants to have the phone with us in case of an emergency.

Does anyone know how much Verizon charges for using their service on a cruise ship? Is it whatever the roaming charge would be from that country? What if I have AC2 which doesn't roam onto non-partner towers.

From what I can understand, the ship's system is supposed to work with all phones?????

Any help would be appreciated.
