I'm a little confused. I have the Treo 700W and decided not to pay
VZW $44 a month to get infrequent emails. But I did want the feature
as a option and opted for pay as you go. Unfortunately I have gone
through a nightmare six months with VZW. I set up the phone to access
a mostle non-used gmail account to be able to send emails if I need
to. Then I set the phone to check every 15 minutes on that site for
emails. Everything was okay for a couple of months then I get a data
charge this month for $244! (This type thing has happened before and
VZW gives conflicting answers to the problem. Some in tech support
say the phone goes out on its on and connects to the internet. Some
say it does not). After hours of CS debate and conflicting answers,
they sent me a new phone. I did not set it to check every 15 minutes.
I think the checking data charges got delayed and piled up onto one
month's bill which confused me into thinking that I had a one-month
issue. VZW could not figure it out and could not give me a firm
answer as to why I was getting such a large bill. Finally one CS
agent credited my bill that amount.
My question is, how can I, or can I, use the phone to get emails
and/or search the web without paying throught the nose to VZW? (I know
I can just check the mail occasionally and save the large data
charge). I think that $44 a month is outrageous when I get DSL at
home at the fastest settings for that amount. Why have a tinker toy
phone to check bs things on my phone and get hammered.
Thanks

@j8g2000cwa.googlegroups.com:
Palm Treo 650
I got a friend's 650 working, finally. VZW stores haven't a clue. They
did, however, give me a number to call for the PDA expert and I called
him from their store.
Be informed that if you sync the palm via VZW, when you get to your
computer you cannot sync the phone via the USB cable...it's either or....
That took a while to setup as you have to go setup VZW's webpage access
to it, then the phone's internal setup, then the computer's to eliminate
the computer trying to overrun the VZW-based sync. How stupid....just
like MP3s and their "music service"...one cancels the other.
Once I got it working, it has stayed working fine, but if you want to
change the sync setup, you have to go through the whole sequence of
things again, in order, to make it work. I have him syncing email over
VZW, now, and all the Palm Desktop stuff over the cable, which Hotsync
does lots faster, of course.
Unlike the Windoze OS, the Palm doesn't crash and never really "boots" as
it stays running all the time. I finally got a PDA, an old Palm III for
$4 from a thrift shop. Some idiot put one of the AAA cells in backwards.
It works great when the batteries are in right. I showed off my bargain
PDA to my friend with the Treo 650. "I didn't know you wanted a palm
pilot.", he said reaching into his lower desk drawer. He pulls out a
Handspring Visor Edge with all the toys and hands it to me. "I don't
need it, now that you got the Treo working so good." I sync the Edge
from the notebook on wifi in the car via infrared with a little USB-IRda
dongle I got for $20 off the net. Voila...no cellphone company tinkering
and locking out features!
