1xRTT vzw password changed? [was Re: Pls Confirm: VZW does not allow DUN using minutes?]

I just got a Nokia 6236i with "Renew every 2", and have found that I can use the IR to "tether" my PC's, Zire 71 and Jornada 728. However, I can only use the qnc/Quick 2 Net connection, and not the 1xRTT that I understand is part of the National Enhanced Services Network for GIN that I have, and MobileWeb 2.0 (latter added with my Nokia order).

In researching my plan and phone upgrade options I found that info you mention below about using <10digitCellNumber>@vzw3g.com / vzw and #777 to make the 1xRTT connection, so tried it while I was waiting for the new phone with my old, Nokia 3589i via a DKU-5 cable. The first night I tried it on my WinXP PC, I got through and had about 20Kbps rate per dslreports, but it hung after a while, and I gave up and went to bed (1am ;-). Next night (waiting till after 9pm of course), I could not get it to connect again (think more Windows config issues - memory blurring). Tried on a Win98 SE PC, and it only would work with qnc ... sorta - would lose the connection or the network config settings, etc.

Then I got the 6236i, and found that XP would pick up the phone as something like "modem over standard infrared". and I could do the "query modem" action from the device manager settings ... sometimes. However, most of the time, it barfed over "port in use by another app" or misconfigured network settings, etc - real moving target to troubleshoot.

That's when I decided to try the simpler Zire, and was delighted to connect with qnc right away (found the AT$QCMDR=2/3 setting info about then: 2 for qnc, 3 for 1x is what I read). I canNOT get the 1x to work any more since that 1st night with the old Nokia. Now, with the Zire and the Jornada, I keep getting challenged for "authentication", and the 1x connection hangs up after I answer "wrong" twice. The Jornada's WinCE (HPC 2000 actually) dialer seems to keep prompting for the password - vzw and qnc (and even my phone's voicemail box pw) are not accepted.

I am wondering if the fact that when I was required to initialize my MobileWeb 2 access with a "security code" on the new Nokia, if that somehow made that security code my "personalzed" password? I figured it was something like an ssh key exchange I am used to seeing with initial acces to ssh on unix/linux servers, which is unique to each client's ssh setup, and not stored on the server as such (unless setting up for unprompted ssh access with public and private keys). Any other ideas?

TIA,
ROC

Well, what no one said is that it will work.

I tether my LG vx8000 and get EVDO speed connects and do not have a data plan and do not even get charged munites of use!

I have the $5/mo mobile web add-on is all. Them's the facts.

All you have to do is make a dial up connecion on your PC using the right userID/password:

<10digitCellNumber>@vzw3g.com / vzw

dial #777 and set the modem init string to:

AT$QCMDR=3
