If you prefer, you can set it to dial a 10-digit

It really should be set to your own cell number to
insure capability in extended service areas.

It's worked everywhere I've been for the past 3 years --
native or extended.

It is getting ubiquitous. But it used to be and still is,
primarily for those with plans that allow true roaming and you
are doing so, that *86 wouldn't work.

It also *used* to be the case that it was billed differently
(where the minutes came from). *86 was regular minutes for
whatever time it was and dialing your own number was M2M for
those that had it.

Now it's just a matter of if it works or not. Dialing your
own number will *always* get you to your voice mail (or at
least your voice mail system if not directly to your mailbox).
I'm guessing there are still places where you can make calls
but dialing *86 doesn't get you to voicemail (may be hard to
find any more).

If I ever do run across someplace where it doesn't work, then
I'll just dial my own number. I don't really see why it's so
important that I change it.
