The solution is to compete on a basis other than just price. The problem
is
that most retailers aren't sufficiently imaginative to do that, the
standard
Ace Hardware business model being a case in point. But examples of such
competition are abundant. My favorite coffee place (Pacific Bay Coffee in
Walnut Creek, CA), for example, is doing very well against Peets and giant

The food industry is hardly an apples to apples comparison to retail. Only
an idiot would claim it is. Oh.....sorry John......didn't mean to out you
like that.
Why don't you stick to discussing retail and show us proof of very
successful companies that don't have to compete on pricing for identical
items.
