Quick, you must not be old enough to remember when the first portable
digital calculators came out in the 70's.;-) I think my father paid
over $200 for one that today's equivalent can be bought at any dollar
store.
But I don't think thats what he meant. He is saying that something with a higher real value is thought to be worth much less.
In 1970 the $200 calculator cost $200 for everyone to buy because there was no subsidy.
But suppose in 1970 you could get the calculator for say $75 if you had a certain amount of funds in your banking account. You get get a replacement calculator every two years if your relationship continued with the bank. Many people would think that the calculators value was $75.
