Dave,

Re: Vonage....research it carefully. I signed up with them last month,
felt it was a great deal. I repeated my info to them at least three times,
including name and desired area code (which their website said was
available).

When I got the confirmation e-mail, they had my name badly misspelled and
an area code 1000 miles from where I am. I decided to call and cancel,
figuring if they can't get information correct for a brand-new customer, I
was looking at major problems down the line. First off, I had to wait on
hold for almost 20 minutes for Customer Service, then they told me I had
to call a different number for cancellations. Another 10-15 minutes on
hold, then I was able to cancel.

Lesson learned; I will eventually get internet phone service on one of our
lines, but from now on, I am making a test call, not to a company's
"sales" line, but to their Customer Service line. If I am on hold more
than five minutes, or my call is answered by someone whose ability to help
me is hampered by their imperfect command of a foreign language (English),
their number goes in the garbage, and I'll move on to the next company.
Too much competition out there----why should I spend all that time on
hold, then have to listen to someone speak gibberish? Then to add insult
to injury, the guy calls me "Chief". Hey---I got your "Chief" right here,
pal.

Now, about cheap pre-paid cellphone service. I don't think you're out of
luck at all. Go to this excellent prepaid comparison site:
http://www.cellguru.net/prepaid_compare.htm and check out the
different plans. I have two prepaid phones, one is TDMA, which is dying
out, but the other one, with Page Plus Cellular, is excellent, cheap, and
uses the Verizon network.

Check it out, and good luck.
Dean

Good information! Thanks, -Dave
