The phone you already have supports the higher (medium) data rate... I gave
you the link to phonescoop in a previous email (for the tech details)... It
will work perfectly fine at the higher speeds.. My roomate has one and uses
it eves/weekends. There are 3 data speeds/types.. Quick 2 Net/14.4/QWK2NET
<--- low speed works with a direct call to your ISP (modem to modem)....
Express/NationalAccess/1X/avg 60-90Kb-bursts to 144 ,---medium speed works
with #777 and mobile office/packet switched, and BroadBandAccess/EVDO -
400-500Kb - bursts to 2.5 Mb (only works in some areas and will not work
with that phone)...

While you can putz around and get NA speeds with just the phone and other
software/cables, it is REAL easy and automatic just to get/install the
Mobile Office Kit (for $19.97) that I gave you a link for. It does all the
stuff for you, rather than trying to do it yourself and making an error.

As for the data plan, technically you may not need it. Part of the
difference between AC1 and AC2 (AC2 started in February of last year, if
your plan is a year old, you have AC1) was that there is a sentence added
(legal terminoldy) that specifically says you MUST have a data plan for
tethered data use. The Minutes of use option has been around for years with
AC1. If you end up with a new phone/plan/AC2, and want to get
BroadbandAccess, you will legally have to get a data plan to tether a phone
to your laptop.

Note, the data option with unlimited minutes, needs a seperate aircard
(carbus card - always on connection - made by several manufacturers and
called different things). Since you only have a phone and plan on tethering
it to the computer, it is essentially a waste of money since you can't use
it for unlimited access, you will use up your voice plan mintes.
