Customer retentions

Anyone got any tips/insider info or weblinks where I can read more about
once my two year contract ends with AT&T next March 09?
When I was in Europe, you would call a Customer Service Retentions
number and say you wanted to take your number to another network and
they would offer you a better rate plan, extras and even a new phone for
free.
I am new in the USA and would like to know other people's experiences
and suggestions so I can maximise my bang-for-my-buck if I renew with
AT&T.
Anything I should be aware of?
My only other option for network is TMobile as I have to have a GSM
phone so I can use SIM cards.
