Dual Mode GSM + AMPS Phones?

Cingular is currently 'encouraging' me to upgrade my TDMA phone to a GSM
unit. I don't have a problem with the GSM part, but I have a dual mode
TDMA + AMPS phone and currently I spend quite a bit of time in AMPS-only
territory. When I have friends at my cabin with their Cingular GSM
phones, they lose signal miles away, so I know its not just the TDMA
that's dying.

Cingular has nothing like a dual mode GSM + AMPS phone. Is there anyone
who makes such a unit?

Also, how does Cingular deal with 'unlocked' phones purchased elsewhere
and brought into their network?
