If I remember the scenario correctly, when Chicago started splitting up area
code 312 and WGN went on cable as a Super Station in competition with WTBS,
then Empire got the 800-588-2-300 number.

BTW, right now the area covered by 1 area code from 1947, when area codes
were first defined, to 1989 has 8 area codes, with 2 more planned. They
used to joke about having to dial 10 digits just to call your neighbor in
the 60's. Unfortunately, it's TWUE now. I'm sitting in what should be area
code 847, with a phone in my pocket in area code 224 and another from area
code 708. There are very few places that have split more than that.
Florida was originally all 305 and has 17 area codes now, so I guess they
hold the record. But it's sort of a cheat, because they split Florida in
two in 1955 and added a 3d area code in 1965.
