1989 cressida cooling problem

Is there any other restriction in the system other than the thermostat? With the thermostat out I disconnected the top hose and held it facing up at the same level as the top of the radiator and with the engine running the level in the hose and the level in the radiator stayed the same. I would have thought the level in one would drop and the other would overflow.I put a new pump in a few weeks ago so I can not figure it out unless something between the pump and thermostat housing is stopping flow.
