I'm cleaning old files from my brother in law's PC, and installing the
latest updates. The machine says it has a Gig of RAM (a sticker on the
case
makes that claim). There are two memory cards, I have to assume they
are
512M since there is an advertised Gig installed.
The problem is, the two memory cards are not installed into adjacent
slots.
Back in the olden days, the RAM had to be installed in adjacent slots,
and
had to be arranged in a particular order if the RAM was not all the
same
size.
I'm installing updates right now and can't turn the machine off, but
when
I
get done with the updates, should I bother putting the RAM into
adjacent
slots, or does this not matter anymore?
How many total slots are there? Are they different colors (Blue &
Black)? Usually this is a paired option, meaning they must be identical
sticks in each color sequence. If you have the 2 sticks in black that
are 512 than it will be okay to add 2 1gig sticks in the blue & still
run in dual channel mode.
Without knowing your exact model I'm just assuming that your slots are
color coded & why they are in adjacent slots.
My bad. There are two blue and two black slots. The slots that are filled
are the same color, but are not next to one another. The blue lsots are
filled, the black slots are empty.
So leave it that way than it's like that for a reason to work properly
in dual mode.....What's the order of the slots? Slot 1 is usually what's
closest to the CPU in the order count. With only 2 sticks they should be
in 1 & 3.......
The sticks are in 1 and 3.
The reason I asked is because in the old days, the sticks were supposed to
be arranged with the small sticks in the first slot and the larger sticks in
the last slot, and the slots were filled in sequence.
But it appears they may be in the correct order or you
may have recieved blue screens as a result of them not. I've seen
computers I worked on where people just put the sticks in 1 & 2 and
wondered what was wrong.......(that's old school boards).....;0)
As far as a *slow* computer......Obviously it seems you have the basics
on how to speed it up a bit. As Sharx mentioned Vista is a HOG, if your
brother decides on more memory make sure they match, as I said more than
likely you can get 2-1 gig sticks & slap than in the blue slots. The
concept is if you buy lets say 2 3200 sticks & your 512 sticks are 2700
your system will run on the lower set(2700), that number is the tranfer
rate, the clock speed will also be reduced if the 3200 is 200mhz & the
512's are 166mhz. These are not great fifferences for the average user
but something to keep in mind for the basics of memory purchasing.
My advice, put XP on the machine.........(LMAO).....I'm still running
Windows 2000 on all 10 of my computers.....;0)
If I could still get Win2k, I'd be using it. I have WinXP Home, and XP Pro
on all of my machines but one, which runs Vista. I seldom use it. My kids
don't even use it for homework or anything, which begs the question, how
come I have it?
My machine has XP Pro with 4Gigs of RAM, and it opens Office Suite products
as fast as I can click the mouse on the icon. I SWEAR, I can click the icon
for any Office App, and a blank page is displayed as fast as I can release
the mouse button. My b-i-l has Vista, and I have little motivation to change
it -- he is the wife's brother, after all.
I can watch the Frys ads for RAM to go on sale, and maybe bump him to 4Gigs
if the sale is good. (I paid $50 for 4G, and got a $25 rebate, making my 4G
cost $25!)
I not only sit in *text* newsgroups to babble, I'm also involved in many
many binary groups as well, I can easily get a copy of Windows 2000 to
ya........(LMAO)........But I don't think that will be a possibiltiy
unless you actully have access to *binary* groups & know what to do,
they are not Outlook Express friendly..........;0)
You know the basics fer yer Bro's machine, do your defrag, clean out
internet cache, stop all those pesky startup programs as they lock
memory use, and the machine should run okay, but memory upgrade,
especially Fista is definately recommended.
