Good question. I suspect that the key's head is larger to accommodate
keyless entry circuitry instead of using a separate fob.
Don't think so, Ray. I just traded a 2000 Corolla without keyless
entry and it had the same 3" chipless key. I don't THINK keyless entry
was available back then on the Corolla (not sure). I've gotten used to
the huge key AND I don't carry too may keys, only about 4. I use one
of those little rings (like in a notebook) to carry the keys in my
pocket. But I wear jeans 99% of the time, and by the time the pocket
goes I'm ready to rag-bag them anyway. For years I've threaded the
little ring on my bathing trunk string while I swim, can't do it with
the chipped key. Have to leave in a locker and hope no one breaks in.
The thief wouldn't even have to search for my car in the lot, just
press the little unlocker gizmo and squawk the lights.

Hmmmm...OK, I can think of 3 other possible explanations for the larger
keys.

The part of the key with the teeth is longer so more teeth fit for a larger
number of possible lock code combinations.

Besides the keyless entry function, some keys have a chip that communicates
with a transponder near the ignition lock for an additional layer of
anti--theft protection. I don't know how large the chip is, but I believe
that it is embedded in the head of the key and the head may be larger to
accommodate the chip.

I'm pretty sure that keyless entry was available on Corollas in 2000 but the
functions were part of a separate fob. Upscale European brands started
using a much larger head on the keys, perhaps so the logo embedded on the
key's head was larger and more prominent so owners could show that they were
driving a Mercedes, Jaguar, Volvo, etc. by leaving their keys on the
restaurant table or bar, and Toyota followed suit.
