My 401(k) is off by more than 30%, and I'm too old to cover the loss with
new contributions. I'm officially screwed. With the expected inflation, my
401(k) should be good for about a decade of retirement -- maybe. The
trouble is, I should last more than a decade ...

Will you have a retirement plan (pension income other than your TSA - & Soc.
Sec.)? If not, I don't envy you at all...

I am -finally- vindicated re: being a financially super-conservative coward.
;-) All of my 403(b) is in fixed; most of it is earning 5% & the balance
4%. Not huge amounts, granted, but at least they're on the positive side of
0. I put 50% of it in variable several years ago, but found I just couldn't
hack it (no real surprise there) when the market went down a little, & so
stuck it back into 100% fixed. Most people I know have theirs in a mix of
variable & fixed, & of course are not happy about what the variable portions
are presently doing... Some are going to wait it out; others are going to
cut their losses & then opt for all fixed.
