Re: {OT:} Navy Nuclear reactors vs. standard utility company reactors

Actually we are at this point already depending on foreigners. If we keep
doing the things we are doing the things we are doing, it will only get
worse

Today with the loss of Bethlehem Steel, no facility in the US is
capable of
building the "stuff" needed to build nuclear power plants in the
US, any
longer.

The last I read, only a Japanese company is making containment
vessels for reactors. They're back-ordered five years.

I was shocked to learn that Westinghouse is now owned by Toshiba.
Toshiba is essentially selling refined version of the same
Westinghouse reactor design from the 1960's. Back in the 70's I
interviewed Westinghouse Nuclear for a job. Back then, the Japanese
were building their plants under license from Westinghouse. I guess
they liked the company so much they bought it...sad. I guess
Babcock-Wilcox got out of the nuclear business (as did GE). Sigh.

Worse yet brain-power in the industry is retiring, fast. We will be
ultimately dependent on another country for expertise in building nuke
plants and spaceships.
