We get! What you are saying is you cant afford to buy and operate the kind
of vehicle you would like to have so you buy and run what you can and
rationalize that fact as best you can
Take heart! Keep on saving and investing, particularly right now when cars,
stocks and Bonds are relatively dirt cheap. I was once in that same position
but with the help of the good lord, I worked hard, took several jobs, earned
myself an Engineering degree, got a job in the automobile design and
manufacturing, changed employers three times, till I got the job that I
wanted in that field, saved and invested so I could retire early, got an
easier job in automobile retail, at a much high salary, started a completely
NEW type of automobile repair business, made it grow by being smarter and
better at doing the same type of work others were doing, then sold it for a
fortune.
Now I'm giving most of it away to schools, hospitals, relatives and friends
and at 83 trying to spend what's left before I die, with the help of the
good lord. Not bad for a now black, then Niger kid from Sothern Georgia,
born in the throws of the great Depression. ;)

You think like that because you believe all buyers base their buying
decision on fuel economy. Do you really think a person that likes or
needs and can afford to buy and operate the bigger safer cars, trucks or
SUV cares about the price of fuel?
Nobody wants to pay more for fuel. Many like me simply buy what they
want or need, no matter the price. The folks that can only afforded to
buy small or midget cars are the ones most effected by the price of fuel
they need to operate their vehicles. Those than do not need or afford
the bigger safer vehicles are the ones buying the small and midget cars.
And yet people like JoeNoBedroom assume since I'm driving a USED Corolla,
that I'm not doing very well in my career, since I do not follow the
'American Way' of buying the biggest car I should be able to afford on my
salary.
1. Since I'm not dating anymore, I don't need a bigger car. I'm not
trying to impress girls with what I drive. If I did, I would buy
1A-148485, the Mercedes 770K owned by that Austrian housepainter. Or
YT3942, a 1926 green Bentley. Or an MG TD.
2. My family taught me to be extremely thrifty. I'm not going to buy a
brand new car for $17,000 when I can get a used one that will give me
close to half the life for $3000 and they're practically the same car.
3. I have other expendetures that insurance doesn't completely cover. So
I have actually less money than someone would expect of someone that earns
as much as I do.
4. I never was a part of the 'take all you can, can all you git, and sit
on the lid' generation. You'll never, ever see a U-haul behind a hearse.
You can't take it with you. Some things you can send on ahead, but money
is not one of them.
