Re: {OT:} Why I'm against the Bailout

Natalie, I am glad you have seen the light and the virtue of living
debt-free, whether or not you are there yet. Yes, "leverage" can be a
great way to make a lot of money using money you don't really have,
but I prefer to sleep at night. People who are responsible enough to
own a house should be responsible enough to investigate whether or not
they can afford it. I do understand that many have been led astray by
a combination of "easy money" and their own ignorance, but everyone
has to learn, some the hard way.

You are against it because you perceive that it would help people that
you don't like (mainly due to class envy).  If it helped people you
liked or at least didn't hate because they are rich, I daresay you
would be for it.  As a Lib, you tend to operate on feelings and
emotions because you lack a set of principles that originate from
outside yourself.

I am against it because the situation is a result of reckless risk-
taking and interferes with the proper operations of the free market
that are designed to penalize those who take such actions.  Those who
call it a CRISIS are doing so because it may result in their loss of
power and influence when they are replaced.  The bankruptcy of banks
and individuals, and resulting economic clean-up process should serve
as a wake-up call to those at ALL levels who have been living beyond
their means, not only that they need to clean up their acts but that
they also need to elect people to office who will NOT spend more money
than the people agree to give them to spend.

You make very good points, but I can see how someone applying for a home
loan is elated when they're approved, and I think probably in most cases
they honestly thought they could swing the financial burden.

Having said that, though - living beyond one's means is the unfortunate way
of life in this country.  I wish I hadn't gotten credit cards in my 20s,
because in my 50s, I'm still paying for them.  Young and stupid, yes, but
most younguns can't see past today, and I was no exception.

One of my sisters-in-law won't buy anything she can't buy with cash.
(Except their home, of course)

Smart woman.
