I want to buy a Corolla with air conditioning & automatic transmission,
1.6L fuel injected, in excellent condition, with less than 100,000 miles
on it.
Should the year be that important?
Not really.
I see that 95-96 range ones are offered for around $6000 with 65k mi on
them.
According to NADA Guides, the average retail for a 1998 Corolla LE with
automatic and AC is around $5,500 here in the Chicago area.
IMO, $6,000 for a 13 or 14 year old car seems high.
Don't know if any particular years are best, but that's about the MOST we
can afford, preferably less.
I've heard that dealers can go down in price though, more than individual
sellers? They price them up some before hand?
Is that true?
Dealers do mark up their used vehicles - they are in business to make money,
and selling vehicles for more than they paid for them is how they make
money. How much they are willing to go down in price depends on how much
traffic they have had on the particular vehicle you are interested in, how
much they have the car on their books for, how long it has been in their
inventory, and how much they marked up the vehicle in the first place. If 5
people seem to be interested in the particular car you are interested in,
the dealer is unlikely to drop the price much. With the recent rise in fuel
prices and the increased demand for fuel-efficient vehicles, it is unlikely
that you are the only person interested in the mint condition, low mileage
fuel efficient Corolla on the dealer's lot.
How much usually?
For example if I see a 96 Corolla with 65k mi being offered for $6000 what
should I actually offer for it, at a dealer?
Offer a little less than you are willing to pay.
