If you NEED an exhaust system, then this makes sense, but if you are replacing the exhaust for the mileage, I think you will never recover the cost.

Let's make a couple of simple assumptions, gas costs $4.00 per gallon, and you get 30 MPG now. (You can adjust the numbers as needed ... ) This means that your per mile cost is 13.33 cents per mile.

If you got the max improvement, your mileage would go to 34 mpg, and your cost per mile would drop to 11.76 cents per mile. This means you will save 1.57 cents per mile, or $0.0157 per mile. You can divide this into the cost of the system to find out how many miles you have to go to recover the cost.

If I assume $750 for the system installed with tax and busted knuckles, complete out the door, it will take in excess of 45,000 miles to pay for.

If your exhaust system is rotted and needs replacement anyhow, then this might make sense compared to a lesser system. But, to buy it only for the fuel savings, I don't think the car will live long enough to recover the cost.

Again, I pulled numbers out of my ass that you might want to adjust. But, all you do is divide the current cost of gas by the miles per gallon to find the cost per mile. Add 4 to your current MPG, and divide the current price again. Subtract the cost per mile from one another to find the difference (savings), then divide the cost of the system by that figure. The result will be the number of miles you have to go to pay for the system. If the price of gas drops, the return on investment (time) goes up, if the price of gas goes up, then the ROI gets shorter. Frankly, movements in the price of gas are not going to change the calculations very much, as a practical matter. Instead of taking 47,770.7 miles to recover the cost of the system, there could be a variation in a range of 47,725 and 47,990. Either way, the ROI is the same.

They look interesting, but two questions come to mind;

Are the fuel mileage increase claims accurate? Could I get a 3-4 MPG
increase for example, in my 93 Corolla wagon?

And how much do they cost? Which goes into the factoring of how long it
would take to make back the fuel savings.
