I envy you, that you can trace your family back so far. Since my
distant ancestors were considered property, there are no vital records
on our origins, other than (of course) Africa. My mom tried to trace
our genealogy, but couldn't get very far.

Oddly enough I have family branches that do not fork from the REAL South.
And I have family branches that I cannot trace back before what my former
future mother-in-law called "That Late Unfortunate Incident" from the
South, too. I don't think they're slaves, but there is nothing I can tie
anyone in this one branch to before the Civil War. Not in Mississippi.
Not in Alabama and not in Georgia, where the later census records and the
marriage record says the earliest person on this line was born in 1867.
Who knows? The problem with the name is that it is common among both
blacks and whites and > without knowing anything about his actual
birthplace or parentage, I'm stuck. And I have no pictures of him. I
do have pictures of his daughter, my grandmother. I have a picture
that seems to date from the 1910's of his mother in law's mother's
family. My grandmother seems to be in it, so I'd guess 1918 or 1919.
I'm trying to guess which one is his mother in law and if the person I
think it is is his daughter. But he's not standing next to the person I
think is his wife if he's in the picture at all.

Charles is a brutha?! Who'd a thunk it? :-)

The one bad thing about Southern women that I've had to avoid is so many
of them are 50 years behind the times. They want you to get them
pregnant so you have to marry them. And some Southern Belles are real
ding-a-lings. But not My Ding-A-Ling. <g>

Gawd, where have you found those women?! The ones around here get
pregnant, but see no reason to marry.

I used to say I was 1/4 Southern, but having lived in Arkansas for a
decade and Mom being from Southern Illinois, I'm probably more Southern
than I dare let on. For some reason lately, I'm craving Original Carter
Family music lately. I found an old kinescope of Mother Maybelle, Helen
and Anita singing Wildwood Flower with a younger June playing the
autoharp and apparently enjoying it very much.

LOL I like bluegrass myself, actually. I have played my "O Brother" CD
down to the plastic, so it's a good thing it's now on my iPod. :-)

One thing you've got to remember is I've lived in 28 different places.
I've never settled down anywhere to get past the superficial girls, until
I got here in the burbs then I find they're ALL superficial and shallow!
Part of the reason I dig for my roots so hard is Dad's family has
basically disowned us. It took me 20 years to find out who my
great-great-grandfather was. We're French-Canadian by name, but not
Catholic, so the rest of the family has written our branch off as the
'black sheep' of the family, because we don't embrace 'The Church'.

Oh good grief. I hate it when people punish the children for their
parents' beliefs. Dumb, dumb, dumb.

Natalie

And the reason our branch left the Church in the first place is that they
buried Great-great-granddad in unconsecrated ground, after he'd been a
faithful son of the Church for 79 years. And then I find out some Baptist
churches do the same thing, just by different means.
