True. Honda is likely the only make that is on par with Toyota in fuel
efficiency of conventional gasoline engine cars.

The Chevy Aveo gets 27/37. The Ford Escape hyrbid (using hybrid components
from Toyota) gets 34 city.

Aveo's gas mileage is a joke for this class. The Yaris and even the larger
Corolla and Civic can get 40+mpg on the highway. My 2004 Civic regularly
gets 40-42mpg on the highway.

Overall, the big 3 don't even come close, especially in the compact and
mid-
sized classes. The compact Chevy Aveo and bloated compact Cobalt get
highway mileage that's comparable to my old mid-sized '93 Accord, which
exceeded EPA's highway estimates by about 5mpg.

What is so different about the Accord that it would exceed the estimated
highway mileage? It was the driving habits, not the car. I would expect that
the Aver to also exceed the highway estimates with the same driver.

It's a combination of both design and driving habits. Toyota and Honda have
long excelled at making class-leading fuel efficient engines, particularly
the 4-cylinders. The Aveo is built by Daewoo, and Korean engines are still
behind in fuel efficiency.

But why would you expect Toyota and Honda engines to get better than the estimated fuel efficiency, yet not the Aveo with the same driver? I would think that if a driver gets better than the estimate for one car, the same driver would get similarly better on all cars. That Daewoo is not as efficient as Toyota and Honda would be taken account of in the estimates.
