Re: $1,800 profit-per-car over GM

I'm not sure Mike, but I think that most of the cars and trucks that Toyota sells in the USA are made in North America. I don't think that very many models are actually imported here.

Part of the pricing structure looks at the competition. If a Taurus <or whatever> sells for 25,000, then a Camry (which occupies the same market space) will also sell for $25,000.

If Toyota makes money at that price, and Ford loses, then so what? Should we allow Ford to set its prices higher just so Toyota can follow suit and make even more money?

I read recently that Toyota only makes 3 or 4 firewalls, Ford makes several. The ramification is that Toyota can move a worker from one line to another with out retraining. Ford, on the other hand, has to retrain people that move around, assuming they can beat the union.

The Toyota business model has lower inherent over head than the Ford model. I assume Toyota has lower overhead than GM as well, which is why Toyota is making money over GM too.

Who ever said Toyota buyers were smart? Obviously Toyota should sell for less than GM vehicles, but Toyotas sell for a lot more.. Why are people willing to pay so much for a Toyota when most or the vehicles they sell in the US are made in low wage countries. They pay less and offer fewer benefits and do not give a pension to their workers in their US plants that assemble car of mostly lower cost imported parts. I switched form Toyota products in 1999 and have been saving thousand of dollar ever since
