I just returned from the dentist. It was painful
and expensive. New crown. You know they are $995 here. Do you
suppose
if the democrats get in to power and somehow pass national health care
will I be able to have free dental care and free crowns?
You are preaching to the choir. I've had umpteen root canals (more than
20), crowns, & bridges; when teeth reinfected, apical surgeries &
surgical
extractions. I know my dentist, endodontist, & oral surgeon a little too
well for my taste. I have dental insurance which is on the minimal side;
over the years I've spent a good $15 - 20K (out of pocket) on my teeth.
Therefore, my sympathy for a person who just had a crown put in place is
minimal. Sorry, but it's all relative.
BTW - having a crown made & put into place is tedious - usually long
sessions in the dentist's chair, but it is not a painful procedure. Even
a
root canal isn't painful - they numb you up to the gills, with Novocain
shot
directly into the canal(s) after the initial shots into the gums (&/or
upper
palate - depending upon which tooth is being done). The local anesthesia
needles are the most painful part of the whole deal. Only the infection
caused by the abscessed tooth, necessitating the dental visits for root
canals & caps/crowns, are painful - sometimes extremely so.
Cathy
The shots are painful when the needle hits a nerve.
True - I've had this happen a few times - feels like lightning shooting
through your mouth. Zap!
Otherwise no.
I beg to differ. The ones that go into the roof of the mouth really pinch.
And the ones that go way in back - they hurt, & feel like the needle's going
to come out in back of my ear! Once the initial shots are in, the rest are
a piece of cake, though, since the area's already fairly numb.
The
rest of the crown (after deadning) is easy, but I wouldn't want to have
them working on this particular tooth without the novocain.
All of my crowns have been done on root-canalled teeth - they were already
deader than dead.
This crown
was 32 years old and it came loose hence the new crown. Well, you've
had far more work than I. I sort of can feel a tiny bit of your pain.
My next infected tooth - I'll gladly give you all of the pain until I get to
the dentist! ;-)
BTW my dentist is a female and she's pretty good, I especially like her
because she answers all my questions and is very patient and does good
work.
I always ask about the process - I want to know exactly what's going on,
what will happen, etc. Thing is, I've had so many root canals done that the
endodontist jokes that I could do them my own by now. During one, while the
hygienist (actually, she prob. is more than a hygienist, but I don't know
what her official description is) was adjusting the files (those little
threaded pin looking deals that he scrapes the pulp out with) during a root
canal, & the dentist asked her for the measurement of one of them - IOW the
depth of that canal. In my head I was guessing "18 mm". She answered "18
mm". I burst out laughing, despite the mouthful of dental stuff.
My endodontist does microscopic surgeries (apicoectomies, for ex. - go in
through a gum flap, sideways through the jawbone to get to the apex of the
root) & the hygienist takes photos of the surgery as he goes along. When
all done, he's shown me the photos on the computer monitor, explaining
exactly what he found in there, what he did, pointing it all out, answering
all of my questions. Interesting; cool.
