check engine light 94 tercel

Hi all,
The check engine light has been coming on intermittently for the last few days. Pardon my stupidity, but if I go to Autozone I can get the codes for what is causing it for free? Is this true? Hopefully it is nothing major. I just replaced the clutch and my wallet is not in the mood for anything else at the moment!
