I disagree heartily...it means everything... Your kids (exactly
like mine) know damned well what'll happen if they misbehave and
what the results will certainly be, therefore they DON'T
misbehave.
Thus, just as in most things, one's kids need to trust and know
for sure how you'll behave in most situations, makes them trust
and rely on you...I really tried not to surprise my kids when I
punished them, I really wanted them to trust that I'd be calm and
fair and unfailingly mete out justice when it was deserved...

Too, I'm sure, my kids used to say to their friends, when "dared"
to climb up on something dangerous..."*** NO! if dad caught me
up there he'd kill me"...it probably got them out of lots of
dangerous pickles...One of my sons told me that once when he was
in a loving mood (sometime after his marriage I believe!... :)
