Sorry, Josh, but there is much Geological proof, both of the last ice age
and the one prior to that. In the sands of time, they are 10,000 years
apart. The THEORY is to WHY. Some think it has to do with the issue of
plate tectonics, I myself subscribe to the theory that since the Earth is
in a 'wobbly' orbit around the sun, every 10,000 years it moves further
out and cools. then, every 10,000 years it moves in closer and warms. We
are really at the end of a warming period. Think of this: The Northern
Hemisphere warms in the summer time, which is June to September. The NH is
closest to the sun on June 21, the summer..er...solstice? One would think
that this would be the HOTTEST day of the year, when in fact, July and
August are really hotter. Do you know why this is? It's like boiling
water; when you bring water to a boil and remove the heat, for a breif
period the water actually gets HOTTER. Same with the Earth; getting closer
to the sun heats the surface up, but the heat isn't released until later.
The same thing happens during warming periods; the heat is trapped and
being released. So, the surface of the planet warms. Now, I don't know
where we are in the cycle of moving further from the sun, but my
well-educated guess is that we are currently moving ever so slightly away
from the sun, but the heating effect is still, well, in effect. Then, just
like at the end of September, all the heat will have been released and the
entire planet will start cooling.
This time, my friend, you hit me on a subject I KNOW quite well! The only
reason I didn't become a Geologist was because of the Math courses
involved; I SUCK at math. But I did take ALL the Geology courses I could
that didn't have an advanced Math prerequisite.
So there!
