I've got a '96 E36 323i. About a year ago I started to get a problem
where
when I went to start the car the engine would spin over quite fast like
there was no compression. I would try to start it several times running
the
starter motor for three or four seconds at a time. It would then start and
run perfectly normally. There has never been partial firing during the
start or rough running afterwards. It always happened on the first start
of
the day, and initially it was only winter (10°C) that it happened.
Ever tried to pushstart it when this happens? If so, could you do that?
It sounds to me like the starter is not engaging and the engine is not
actually turning over at all. You can verify this by watching the belts
the next time it happens. What you're hearing, then, would be only the
starter itself.
I second the starter motor thought. Specifically, the bendix spring, which
cannot be replaced separately from the starter in most cases.
