87 325is shifter

I just finished rebuilding the shifter on an 87 325is and I'm not
sure the action is what I expected. I replaced all of the bushings
including the front and rear bushings on the aluminum mount bar that
goes from the top of the tranny to the body. I guess I expected the
shift pattern to be very defined after the rebuild. What I got was
less play but I am missing the defined gear locations I expected. Is
this normal?
