Here's the premise..

Our workstations at school use Windows XP Professional with SP3. For
our Lab Sims we have to do, we can only use it on the Virtual PC. The
reason being is we don't have admin rights to the main system to
install the software. However, we do from the virtual.

The VPC also uses XP Pro SP3..

Here's the challenge.. As of now we can't print from the Virtual PC.
The printer, of course, is a network printer.

The instructor, as well as myself, have never installed a printer on a
Virtual PC. He isn't sure that it can be done, but I say that it can
in that I did a little research during class and found that the
printer needs to be emulated.

I was just wondering if anyone of you fine folks have ever printed any
documents using a networked printer from a VPC? If so, how were you
able to accomplish the task of setting up the networked printer?

I have the printer type.. It's an HP LaserJet 8000. I know the IP
address of the printer, the group that it resides in on the main Win
XP workstation which is 057Students (057-ACADEMIC\057Students) and the
printer name which is 057-114-Printer.

The server name for the network is NewFrontier.

Can anyone take a stab at it? I'm stuck. Kinda..

Thanks guys/gals! :)
It should just show up, if you join the group, at least it does with VirtualBox from Sun. I can see files on my wifes OSX box once I log into it, from a virtual Win7 RC along with her printers under VBox. It worked the same way to my desktop with a shared laser with a virtual Linux install, that I did test, no problems.

I haven't tried printing to her printer, but it did show up, so it can't be that difficult from there.

Plug away, it shouldn't be that hard.
Well the furthest I got along was that one of the configs I did to the
default printer that the virtual PC had did detect that the printer
was out of paper. Yet after the instructor loaded the paper into the
tray and the out of paper message went away, the test page wouldn't
print. So there must be something that I'm doing wrong or haven't
configured or even forgot about doing.

I had it try to detect any printer and it found nothing.
Never used Virtual PC, but you proved you have some connectivity, when you sent the job was there a BUSY indicator of some sort, i.e. it got a job but flushed it?
Well the icon briefly (maybe a fraction of a second) appeared in the
notification area, but before that even happened it asked me what I
wanted to save the file as. And all I did was click the "Print Test
Page" button.

btw it didn't pop-up a balloon stating that the document was sent to
the printer as it should have.

Now, mind you, all I did was change the configuration from the default
"Microsoft XPS Document Writer". I never used the add printer wizard.
Dumb question: is the windows firewall turned off?
In the virtual PC, yes. They do however have a hardware firewall
installed. I wish I could remember what it was but I've only seen it
once this entire course.
It's possible I guess, that the firewall is preventing proper communication with the printer. You could try using a laptop running windows to connect to the same network (preferably from the same spot as the computer is at) and see if you can print.

Hmmm.. You just gave me an idea I hadn't thought of.

Granted my lappy requires a docking station since the battery pack is
no good. That and the fact that the NIC is on the docking station.. It
uses 98 SE but I can still get connectivity on it with no problem.

Here's what it and the docking station looks like.. http://ossit.no-ip.org:4700/lappy.jpg

It's an IBM ThinkPad 760EL.

And I thought the docking station for my old Dell C600
was big. FLNF
