I finally got one of those weather radios. Radio shack is probably the only place I've seen them. It has a charging crank,am/fm/weather radio a built in flashlight, a severe weather warning buzzer etc. But the best thing about it, is that it has a cell phone charger so you can charge your phone during a prolonged power failure. Considering the length of power failures we can get in Kentucky this is a most useful feature. Not bad for $39.

Not a bad feature to have, but realize that after the power has been off for a prolonged period, most of the cell towers will be dead too - batteries only, no generators. I've been through that twice from hurricanes. I now have my own generator, an amateur radio license, and participate in local and state community emergency response teams. I will be in touch and probably on line (packet radio at 9600 baud) even after a major disaster.

We have a very weird power grid here in Kentucky. We had that ice storm a few months ago, our power went out for about 2 hours, but the people on the next street over had power. The cell tower is just down the street from me, I have no idea if it went out or not, but I still had cell service. For some people in Kentucky at that time, the power was out for weeks, they were told they should move until the power was back. I'm considering getting a generator, I wonder if there is such a thing as a generator attachment for a lawn tractor (which I also have to get) :-)

There are PTO (Power Take Off) generators that will
hook to the PTO shaft on a tractor. If you had one
like a small Kubota or heck you may find an old Ford
tractor around there. Most farm tractors have a PTO
that can be used for all sorts of things. We had a
couple of old Ferguson tractors that had PTO's that
hooked right up to the bush hog grass cutters.

I can't imagine that this type of setup would be anywhere near as efficient (in fuel usage) as a dedicated generator. However, it might offer a lower up front cost. Another advantage is that a tractor has a hell of a lot bigger tank than a typical generator. That's the one thing about mine that I don't like. One tank will last only about 8-10 hours depending on current load.

Well the old tractors are designed to put around at
low RPM. The 1949 Ferguson I rebuilt had one hell of
a four cylinder engine. The damn thing would run and
run forever it seemed. A machine like that doesn't
really care about the latest and highest quality fuel.
It had an updraft carburetor and big fuel tank so it
would run for a long time. The PTO gen sets can be
quite a good buy. Look at the KW ratings on this site:
