So...for reasons of my own, I am attempting a dual boot between Linux
and Windows. First, to cover the obvious responses: I don't want to
use Vista...period. Win2k is awesome, except on this home built
machine, there is no support for the onboard LAN in Win2k. XP is my
second choice.

Okay, now the problem.

The symptom: Place WinXP CD in system, power up, etc...system says
the usual: "press any key to boot from cd" so I press
spacebar...then "setup is inspecting your hardware, etc"

..then a black screen. No cursor, no beeps, no errors....and I've let
it sit for quite awhile....but alas, computer is in a coma at this
point, other than it responds to the "3 finger salute"

I read the other posts.

Typically if you've got a *nix system installed GRUB won't like to allow
Wintendo to mess with teh MBR. That's my guess as to what's happening.

As Rev said, why not load VirtualBox or VMWare? You'll get the added
benefit of being able to backup your entire Wintendo system in one file off
to a hard drive and know you can resurrect it anytime on any machine.

I have slipped over to using VB from VMWare (even though I just signed a
$170,000 check over to EMC for other things) because I like the "seamless
mode" feature of VB.

I use that on a daily basis when working from home in the evenings. As you
can see in that screen, I've got IE7, Outlook 2003, and Firefox (linux) all
running on my desktop. The Vista toolbar is right above my KDE kicker.

That's exactly what VMware Fusion does on the Mac. I can run XP, Vista, and a couple different flavors of linux integrated with my desktop. I might add that if MCT decides to go the VMware route and he wants to back up his virtual machines, he needs to use a file system which supports files larger than 2GB (ie. no fat 32). I can't back up my virtual machines on my little portable drives because my winXP VM is 8GB.
