I know it's an old version of windows, but I really don't have many
computers that could handle later Windows versions. Maybe Windows
2000 (that'd be okay) or Windows Me (who'd want it though), but more
than likely
not Windows XP (I have sub gHz machines (except for one machine). I
have various copies of Windows 98 disks, since my original got too
scratched, but
I have been a bit lax myself and let my copies get scratched. So the
question is thus:
Does anyone know of a good place to get a full (e.g. all files and
bootable)
Windows 98 disk on the cheap? I could go to eBay, but they are a BIT
expensive (read 30-40$) and I don't know of any places that I could
get it locally like a computer shop.
If anyone has any information on where I could get the disks (they
don't even have to be originals, they just would have to work as an
install cd) then please tell me.
Sincerely,
dracosilv (Jonathan Herr)
That's *steep* for an O/S that old. But if people will pay that, then
that's what they'll sell for.
Just how bad are the disks scratched? If you go on-line, there's
several methods for repairing scratched CDs. They range from
commercial products (like the disk doctor) to stuff around the house
(toothpaste, peanut butter). A lot of the used video game/movie
places around here will repair a disk for a few bucks. I'm sure they
do that wherever you are, too.
If the disks aren't *that* bad, I'd try to repair it first. Just need
to fix it enough to make a clean, backup copy of it.
If that don't work, and your heart is set on W98SE, cheap, you may
have to try torrent.
Otherwise, linux. Machines don't need as much ass to run that as they
do windows.
The reason I use windows is actually because: 1: I'm used to it (familiar)
and 2: I run some apps on it that aren't/can't be run in linux
(Qbasic/QuickBasic). Otherwise I WOULD switch over to linux (and I'm
actually starting to try and switch over more.
I have no probs with that. I'm used to windows, too. QuickBasic brings back
some memories.
Anyway, to follow up on my first suggestion., are the disks too scratched to
repair?
