Hey, I went to a MS conference yesterday. It was the VS 2008, SQL 2008,
Server 2008 launch.

Ballmer was there as was Tom Brokaw.

They did give me Windows Vista Ultimate as well as VS 2008, SQL Server 2008
and a preview version (no expiration) of Windows 2008.

Please tell me Windows 2008 will be impervious to viruses!!! I have spent the last couple of days cleaning fucking stupid viri off retarded Lusers XP laptops. I just don't know how they get them but they do, and shitty virus scanners like Macaffee do nothing to stop the carnage. I have had one virus in my whole life and that was the "Davinci" virus on my 386 in about 1992 or 1993. It was at that time I realized virus scanners were totally useless.
I don't even run AV on my personal machines, and I haven't had a virus since I had one on my 386 as well. I'll run a trendmicro online scan every now and then just to be sure, but it never finds anything dangerous. It's pretty simple... just don't be an idiot. Don't run executables from downloads or email attachments, and for GODS SAKES, DON'T RUN IE OR OE.
Heck, my mail servers won't even pass an executable of any kind.
Doesn't matter what browser you use, there are plenty of holes with
them all. Usually the more obscure browsers tend to be better since
they're not as targeted due to the lower potential of infection. At
this point though Firefox and Netscape aren't any safer than IE.

That's another funny thing about this particular person's computer, after they had clicked on the "online virus scanner" and infected themselves with enough malware, IE became inoperable, so they started using firefox until of course it also became unusable. It was a nightmare. I finally got the thing working OK, but I'm not convinced it is totally clean despite Macaffee and kaspersky and adaware saying it is. I think it will need a clean install of XP, but I just didn't have time to do that after running all those scans.

Trust me, you didn't get it all. A full system restore is the ONLY
reliable way of recovery after a real nasty malware infection. Also
keep in mind that many malware infections are also capable of
hijacking anti-virus and anti-malware software, either disabling their
ability to fix detected problems, disabling their ability to detect
problems or by making the whole program itself inoperable.

The big difference between malware and a virus is that malware is
regenerative, hack off its head and two will grow back in its place.

Yeah, I know. Unfortunately, I simply didn't have the time. It will need an XP reinstall not a system restore (in the XP sense), the malware will have wormed it's self into the system restore facility in XP.

The malware is "disabled" at least, but I don't think all the registry entries or dll's are gone. Next time she clicks on a stupid banner add it will be easier for the system to get infected because a number of the files are already there. She had so much of that crap that the computer had become almost unusable, at least she can use it now.
