To be precise, teranews.com (and the similar bubbanews.com which has
the same newsfeed) each have a low-end account which have only a $3.95
U.S. setup fee and no monthly fee. They only have about a 62.5 meg d/l
limit/day so no d/l'ing pirated movies. At least with Teranews, the
way the quota works is that you might be able to download say 200 megs
while connected but then you won't be able to logon again for a few
days until you have a positive download balance.

Some free servers (no binaries): news.aioe.org, a number of different
servers with different features - readfreenews.net, news.tornevall.net
(free registration), news.datemas.de (free registration). There are
many others.

aioe.org is good if a newsgroup you want to read is being flooded by
Hipcrime's News Agent - they have good filters for that sort of thing.

Of course, there are some Google forums which aren't carried by news
servers.

There is also a frequently well-deserved prejudice against Google
Groups users. Google groups seem to be a rich source of illegal (in
most places) "pyramid scam" chain letter postings and especially those
which are not in the language of the newsgroup.

On the other hand, some newsgroups have several valuable contributors
who use Google groups. Frequently these are people who can't use news
clients at work for various reasons.

....um, maybe because they should be WORKING at work. Duh uh, you mean
you're NOT supposed to be surfing around and posting *** to Usenet on
company time? Woah, what a concept.
