development goes, just stick with W3C HTML 401 Transitional compliant

Smart developers work to a strict set of universal standards ie CSS then use
their 'smarts' to code cross browser fixes. When the browsers start
universally displaying the information correctly this will not be necessary.
They don't resort to flash.

I manually code everything W3C HTML 4.01 Transitional compliant and
I've yet to see any browser that any page I've ever coded wouldn't
display correctly on, and I've tested on most browsers. It's been my
experience that if it gets past the W3C markup validator, it'll
generally display properly regardless of browser. Sure, there are
minor differences in the way different browsers display various
commands (such as <hr> - horizontal rule), but I haven't seen anything
that drastically screwed up the overall display of the page, such as
the typical alignment problems that are routinely evident in the non
W3C compliant crap code generated by FrontPage and the likes. Keep in
mind that my stuff isn't as cutting edge and snazzy as Matts. I can
appreciate the talent involved in effecting such cutting edge
artistry, but I generally try to keep it simple and functional because
that seems far more fool proof when you're trying to build a secure
and effective commercial site. A lot of people must appreciate that as
I do manage to sell a good bit of stuff on the net. ;-)
