Hello, all. I want to know which operating system to get. Now, I'm on
Windows XP, which I don't like. I would like a Linux distribution, but
I have no experience with Linux, so I want a "beginner"-style
distribution. I have tried to get Ubuntu Linux, but when it came in
the mail, I couldn't install it on my computer, which is a really old
one (an IBM personal computer 300 PL). Until I get a newer one, I am
stuck with this old piece of outdated junk. I need a simple, user
friendly, free operating system, preferably with a GUI, that can run
on this machine. Also, I would like to learn to program, so I need a
system that would help me (as I have been told that Linux does). I
have considered FreeBSD, but I think that it would be too "deep" for
such a neophyte. All help greatly appreciated.

Play with a few live cd's to find one that works on your system. Otherwise
try Suse, Linspire, Xandros, Mandrake or Mepis. Like Ubuntu they can be a
good starting point. You're going to have fun with the drivers by the
articles culled by google. Have fun. ;p

They're free aren't they? How do I get them? The Ubuntu disc ran so
slowly on my computer, it didn't really do anything. I selected
install and the background came up, and what I guess was a loading
window, then...... nothing. I really need an older version of
something. I'll mess around with anything, as I have a windows XP disc
and can always start over.
