I just spent about 3 hours trying to fix itunes v7.1.1 (for M$)
I upgraded because they supposedly fixed the problem with gaps between
songs. That really ruins albums like Dark Side of the Moon or Abbie
Road. Its bad enough that they didn't really fix it, but now it will
just randomly corrupt the library, which makes it nearly unusable.
I eventually had to export my playlists, uninstall itunes, and then go
into the registry and explorer to REALLY uninstall stuff. Then I was
able to revert back to v6.0.5, re-load my 20+GB of MP3s and re-import
my playlists.

I though Apple software was supposed to be sooo great.
Maybe they don't try very hard on their windows versions.

I find iTunes to be really annoying, I have never had specific problems
with it (corrupting the library etc.) on my mac, but it just kind of
moves in and takes over. The only positive thing I have to say about it
is that I like it's tag editing feature. However, I would just as
happily do without it if I could put music on my iPod directly.

Yeah, I know what you mean about it taking over.
Thank god I wasn't foolish enough to let it manage my files.
I would have really been pissed if it had corrupted the actual files.

One of my biggest complaints was that is starts out showing songs in
track order, but if you click on the title column, it goes to alpha
order and there is no obvious way to get it back to track order.
I finally figured out that I could add the track number column to the
display and then order by that.

Did the new version on the Mac succeed in removing the gaps between
tracks? That still bothers me. I wrote my own MP3 player (2
actually, 1 MS and 1 Linux) about 3-4 years ago, and it was very
smooth switching between songs. I used to have an old laptop in my
truck so that I wasn't tortured by the normal radio. It became more
trouble than it was worth keeping that old lappie running, so I bought
an ipod shuffle. I went from having TOTAL control to having almost
none. I do like the ipod, but I hate itunes.

I should probably post the code to those mp3 players. Someone may get
some use out of them. To really be able to use it while driving they
would have to build a dashboard controller for it. I designed and
built a small box with a 2 line by 40 char LCD and 5 (or was it 6?)
buttons for managing the device that connect to com1 and powered by
leaching from the USB. And I added a remote power switch to the
laptop. Then wrote a windows program that allowed me to simply drag
and drop files to create playlists. You can create playlists thru the
dashboard controller, but its tedious.

I am planning on getting a PDA phone this fall. Maybe I will port
that MP3 player to windows mobile and ditch the ipod.
