Re: obtain target unix password file

On Tue, 24 Apr 2007 20:27:33 -0700, a rock fell from the sky, hitting
tiger66 on the head, and inspiring the following:

Hi All
I am trying to hack a target machine, set up by my school. After running
nmap -O <target IP>, I know that the machine is running linux

I was wondering if anyone know the steps of getting my target machine's
password, then use john the ripper to crack it and to gain the access?

Any input would be really appreciated

Thanks

Very simple.

Ask the owner.

If that doesn't work, look for the yellow sticky note on the monitor with
the root password.

HTH!
