Thats odd. Iget mad all the time and unplug my box. which consists of freebsd, suse, solaris, and 4 other os's. Anyways i have never had any problems with getting back in , it just does its normal fsk check at boot up and fixing any bad blocks, and im back in. What you are describing is a router connection on that particular box. Meaning that when you plug the computer back in and reboot it, it needs to be reset from the router to assign it an internal ip. if not then you have a funky modem and just meeds to be reset. no biggie really. if you ever need help with something .. feel free to post with my name in it . ill do what i can. I have been running freebsd since 1994 and bsd-Lite before that, as well as most linux distro's since 96 .
