Actually you bring up a good point.
I'd be curious - in these days of instant-access - how many telephone ports
are still in use by modems. For example, given a company who has a block
of number, say 800-555-1000 through 800-555-1999, how many modems there
still are. Of course, I would not be at all surprised if there were a few
"forgotten" modems still running at 9600 or 14.4 waiting for calls.
I know that we - for example - still provide modems for some telecommuters
who want dial-in access to the mainframe. In our case, with 18K workers and
an entire series of prefixes, we'd have a lot of numbers to track. We have
- for example - 999-426-0000 all the way to 999-428-9999.
At the same time, I know it is full-time job for peeps to (a) make sure our
wi-fi access points are secure and (b) that the SSID isn't being
broadcasted. Consider that we have over 1300 buildings covering around
20,000 square miles, it is a tough job. :)
But, hey, I'm just a low-level secretary so what do I know about such
things?
